We have found many ways to use our growing knowledge of composites. We have found ourselves making parts not only for the Kolb project but also for our motorcycles and radio controlled models. When ever possible we use the vacuum bagging method to produce strong, light weight parts. Our simple vacuum pump has done a wonderful job but we wanted to improve it to last longer and operate more efficiently.  Scott located plans from Joe Woodworker to take our existing vacuum pump and add a reservoir and regulator. The reservoir/ regulator system prevents the pump from running constantly. The system is made up of the main PVC tanks that provide volume, the small header tank that consist of free air to take the load of the pump at start up and a vacuum switch to control the shut off. The pump operates for about 15 seconds at 10 minute intervals to maintain the vacuum we need. If we do a good job of sealing the vacuum bag around our part the interval can be much greater.
